Better Hearing Month Spotlights Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is a common health problem amongst Americans. In fact, 48 million people experience some level of hearing loss in the U.S. alone. That is why the American Speech-Language Hearing Association has dedicated the month of May as Better Hearing and Speech Month, in order to raise awareness of hearing loss.

Untreated hearing loss may seem like an inconvenience, but it has been linked to a number of other health problems including depression, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. That is why audiologists urge people to see a hearing specialist right away if they are experiencing any level of hearing loss.

If you’re unsure if you are experiencing hearing loss, here are some common signs to be on the lookout for:

  • Difficulty understanding words or asking people to repeat themselves.
  • Continuously turning up the volume on the television or radio.
  • Cupping your hand around your ear to hear better.
  • Difficulty hearing in noisy environments such as restaurants, bars or other social settings.
